Here's one of John's swings from our pre-season get together!
If I had to pick a favorite setup, John's would be it! His stance, hand position, and bat angle are picture perfect!
Though not as severely as many of his teammates, John also begins moving his arms and bat forward as he strides forward. Notice his change in position at the point in time the heel of his stride foot hits the ground:
You can also see just a tiny bit of bat drag here...powering his swing with his back (right) arm, leading with his back elbow.
Now, here's where things get REALLY interesting with John's swing:
In the first frame above, John in very good impact position. If he hit the ball in that position, perhaps with a bit more upper body tilt, and kept rotating with his upper body, he'd CRUSH it! Instead, in the second frame, you and see he beings to unhinge his right wrist, likely trying to EXTEND at impact. In the final frame, you can see he has extend his wrist completely, and the bat is now pointing towards the ground.
Ideal impact position (home run swing by Albert Pujols):
Recipe for succes for John:
1) Dry swings to teach proper stride and load
2) Contact position, pull-back, swing tee drill
3) Broomstick behind the back drill to teach rotation through impact
John's going to be ripping the cover off the ball!
